Welcome to GTP!

GTP is basically a testbed for myself to try out new things as well as show off, blog, update, experiment, etc. I am a student enrolled in the University of Phoenix and I recently got my associate of arts in Information Systems and am on my way to attaining a bachelors in Software Engineering. I love to code!

News & Updates

Time flies
Time really does fly doesn't it? It's been a very long time since i've added anything to this blog so I dont know quite where to begin.

I guess it would be good to mention that I did get an A (98%) in my programming class though I didn't really expect to get less. I was thoroughly surprised though that the next class I took: Discrete Mathematics, I got an A in. Yes, thats right, I got an A. Still after almost 2 months I am still in disbelief. I loved the class and I absolutely loved what I learned in it! It was my first real "taste" of serious college level math. Linear programming, linear computation, linear algebra, along with a very large spoonful of financial math was basically what the entire class consisted of. I was always so bored in algebra and geometry during my high school years and I thought that is how all math was. Wow I was wrong!

After I finished the math class I did what not many people do at UoP, I took two classes at once. They were business classes and like always I thought they would be "fluff" classes to me. I dont mean "fluff" as in not necessary, I mean "fluff" as in redundant and basically draws on the same principles that I've heard time and time again. Although I was right in my conclusion - I was also very wrong in my assumption of how much work was involved. Basically each class required you to read 6 chapters a week out of two separate books. That basically means I was reading 12 chapters a week while working on discussion questions and responses, working on individual assignments, and working on learning team assignments for BOTH classes. Oh and add to the mix the fact that I just got promoted at work to a managerial position (which bumped me up a LOT of hours) and you basically have me pulling my hair out from stress and wishing there was 48 hours in a day. All in all, I finished last week, and I got my final grades - an A and a B. I was absolutely thrilled. Oh and my team is the #2 ranked team in the nation at my job - we beat everyone except one chicago team wink

Oh yeah! I put down my dislike for Apple just one little notch because I bought myself an iPad. Honestly, I think it has a lot of potential - an enormous amount of potential - but right now it is crippled by the OS it is running.

A lot of events happened as well in my personal life though I probably don't remember them all. Kim came out in July and that was a fun four days that was only supposed to be three, laughing . I met up with my family who were vacationing on Marco Island last week on Friday. I enjoyed all the beer, beach, and bikini's, haha. And thats actually about it I think. Im definitely maturing a lot more both personally (with the realization im an idiot) and professionally (holy cow I didnt think managing involved so much!). My next class is learning Visual Basic .NET which is another class i'll probably finish in the first few days, haha.

Hope everyone is well smile

3D Stuff
I found a REALLY cool program called "Scrulptris" that basically is a 3D Modeler. You "mold" a blob of clay into anything you want. It's probably the coolest program I've ever found. And its FREE.

Check out some renders I made:

Monster v1
Monster v2

Alien v1
Alien v1

Floater v1
Floater v1

LOLien v1

In other news im almost done with my first programming course and I still have a 98%. I lost a point so I guess no 100% sad

Hello There
Good day to ya! Just a few quick things I've been doing recently:

- Got my breadboard along with a crapload of resistors, capacitors, leds, and 555 integrated circuits. Basically, im making something very shiny for fun. Electrical engineering actually has a lot more theory than I thought there would be... been reading a book called "Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics" from the library

- Been messing around with the Android SDK and Google Webkit, both of which are freakin awesome. Im planning out a small project that will encompass both of those things so we'll have to see if I actually get to it, haha...

- Still have a 100% in my programming class wink its starting to become a little boring though as my responses dont typically get many replies (im assuming its because I use real code examples)

- Speaking of class, I had one final revision to my final project. Here's the updated source. Basically used enums to make choices less ambiguous and separated system() calls since thats how it would be on a microprocessor controlling the pump anyways...

- Yes, I am still teaching myself calculus (thought its getting a LOT harder now!!!) I hope that once I've grasped the concepts, and once I've passed my discrete mathematics course ill be ready to apply for an internship at Google, which is where I would really want to work.

Hope all is well with ya'll! Good evening laughing

Small stuff
Made some revisions to my final project... now its totally done, and im only on the 2nd week into the class.

Source code is here.

I got a temp job offer to work on retail resets and stuff in Walgreens stores (being hired by an outside company) in Coconut Creek. I accepted of course, it'll give me enough money to pay off my last vacation, as well as maybe get me a nice new graphics card! yay!

Also! My uncle hasn't gotten back to me on his business/website, but I did basically finish it. Here it is.

Oh well! I need another project or something >.< Did I mention I love physics? Oh and im starting to learn calculus! Its actually not as hard as I originally thought... Im reading a book called "Calculus Made Easy" and it is quite easy so far.

Been awhile!
Ok so it's been awhile since I've updated the blog! Well not much has really been going on. I finally started on my first programming course (after only 2.5 years of college!) and I took the liberty of coding the final project in C++ on the first day of class. It's a terribly simple project (only about 400 lines) that basically you had to make a virtual gas pump with some guidelines.

Source code is here.

As you can see (if you even understand it) it's written in pretty elementary C with some C++ mixed in (basic use of the STL). All of my learning teams members don't know any systems languages so I tried to write it as simple as possible.

Anyways, other than that i've been reading up on chemistry, reading the book "World of the Elements - Elements of the World" (Wiley, 2007). It's a very fascinating look at the people who brought about what we know on atoms. Physics and understanding it is my 2nd goal in life, 1st being a great programmer.

I've also decided that I need to write more on this blog/news on things I am working on or doing, so I am going to push myself to update at least once a week.

Oh and for those who haven't heard yet, a popular MMORPG by the name of "Ryzom" has just went open source! The client, server, and tools are all avialable to download so I'll be definitely checking that out and you should too!

Stuff!
I was hoping to have a preliminary website completed for my uncles new business by Wednesday this past week, but of course I never got around to it. Damn video games! But on a positive note, I have been working on it for the past 16 hours or so! (Intermixed with gaming of course)

Here is a close to final screenshot of the design: Clickie. Remember I haven't even touched photoshop in a couple years so dont make fun! Critiques and suggestions are always welcome.

I just have to slice it and then get rid of/update the HTML to use CSS and work nice with XHTML standards. The main body is going to be an iframe (I think -- its been awhile since I've done website work).

I would also like to point out that I setup a gmail account, facebook group, and twitter account for "McCarty Training" and I plan on integrating them into the website. The bad news: I'm already thinking about the next design. I dont know why but whenever I get close to completion on something I always start thinking of the next iteration... oh well. wink

Also! Almost forgot. I just finished downloading Runes of Magic and I got to level 6. So far it seems like a cool game (and that's saying something because I hate WoW). I love how you can have dual classes. But the reason I bring this game up is because so far there seems to be only one actual bot program that injects itself into the game. All the other "bots" are actually just over-glorified macro apps. This is interesting to me because I wanted to work with game reversing again, and what better way then to build your own bot for an MMO? Riiiiight? laughing Stay tuned for more news on that in the next coming weeks.

Back from Vacation
I had a wonderful vacation over the past 8 days! I had a good friend, Kim, come down from Chicago from Thurs last week to today. We spent the week at Grand Palms golf resort and spa and we had a blast. It's been awhile since I saw her and the wait was definitely worth it. smile I hope I get to see her again soon! <3

Finished my first course in my bachelors program this past week as well. I love Univ of Phx's 5 week courses. It's so much better than the associates 9 week courses. More discussion and working in teams is bad-ass.

I'm gonna be taking a look at the Epoch programming language again as I like where the author is going to be taking it in the near future. Definitely check it out if you haven't heard of it!

Also, I'll be starting work again on my uncles Logo/Website for his new business "McCarty Training" Hopefully ill have the logo and basic preliminary website done by Wednesday of next week.

Mobile version
Something that has interested me for awhile is rolling out a website for both desktop and mobile platforms at the same time with as little head aches as possible. Although I havent done much work with web programming in a while I figured it would be a cool thing to work on. Another big reason is because I just recently got my first smartphone not too long ago laughing Android FTW!

The mobile website is here. Note: You will need a mobile browser to access it of course!

It is kind of plain at the moment, but thats because im trying to figure out how to have multiple style sheets within CuteNews.

CuteNews Integration
Adding new integration into the website... I wonder how this will look! CuteNews seems to be a pretty fast and quick thing to add to websites. Sorry if it seems im rambling on, i'm just trying to make a big enough news post without resorting to Lorem Ipsum. haha. So how is life?

Mine is grand. Kind of tired though!
